Ideas are Dimes a Dozen: Large Language Models for Idea Generation in Innovation

Large language models (LLMs) such as OpenAI's GPT series have shown remarkable capabilities in generating fluent and coherent text in various domains. We compar

  • In this study, the researchers compared the performance of ChatGPT versus human ideators in generating new product ideas for the college student market.
  • The study measured and compared the productivity and quality of ideas between ChatGPT and a sample of 200 ideas created by students at the University of Pennsylvania.
  • Idea quality was measured by surveys assessing consumer purchase intent. On average, ChatGPT's ideas scored significantly higher on purchase intent compared to the human-generated ideas.
  • This may shift human focus from idea generation to idea evaluation.

"If you don't use these tools [AI], then you cannot really compete with anyone like other people."
"There's a few things we need to change. One is that we need to start teaching AI Thinking as early as possible."
"We still use the same way to teachโ€ฆthe more I think about it, the more I feel like we need to push to change that."

For practical purposes, AI is creative.
Three new working papers show that AI-generated ideas are often judged as both more creative and more useful than the ones humans come up with. And they also show you donโ€™t need elaborate prompts to get good ideas.
You probably should be using AI every time you need to generate ideas.

"I gave myself 30 minutes, and tried to accomplish as much as I could during that time on a single business project. And what it accomplished was superhuman."
"key is that I was able to do this using the tools available today, without any specific technical knowledge, and in plain English prompts: I just asked for what I wanted, and the AI provided it. That means almost everyone else can do it, too"

Superhuman: What can AI do in 30 minutes?

AI multiplies your efforts. I found out by how much...

"We now have two separate controlled studies of the impact of ChatGPT and related technologies on knowledge work, and the results are impressive. A study of programmers found a increase of 55.8% in productivity when using AI"
"a second study asked professionals to write realistic memos, strategy documents and policies. The ones who were given ChatGPT completed tasks 37% faster, and their average writing quality increased as well. All of this is without added training or extensive experience using ChatGPT (which I found makes a huge difference)."
